Fashion in Edmonton

I want to go shopping, really badly. It reminded me of a project I did near the end of last year at NAIT. Here is my feature : Fashion in Edmonton. Highlighting Decadence, Foosh and Meese. They all carry quite a few Canadian labels, so keep an eye out!

Quarterlife-The Series

As I navigated through the mass of reality shows on TV last night, I was pleasantly surprised to stumble upon the premiere of the new NBC series called Quarterlife. It's about a group of young 20 somethings living together are trying to figure out who they are, while trying to manage their relationships, work and personal issues. Dylan, the main character, blogs about her life as well as her friends, which makes for raw and emotional video confessions captured by none other then her Mac Laptop. From the creators of the 90's teen angst hit series "My So Called Life" staring a young Claire Danes, the natural drama of life and insecurity flows freely in Quarterlife. Did I mention the series got its start online? There are about 30 mini episodes which have been on the internet for about a year. After generating a large fan base online, NBC picked up the series and you can now catch it Sunday nights at 9/8 central.

party till shes pregnant

THROW A COSTUME PARTY! THEY ARE THE BEST!

This weekend my good friends Mary and Rob threw a birthday/costume party... there are over 400 pictures from that night. I'm not sure its possible for me to to sum up exactly how much I love dressing up, but it's up there with Christmas and my Birthday. That being said, I think a costume party as an ultimate test of friendship. If you throw a costume party and people show up in ridiculous outfits, you know they are keepers. And I don't mean dress up as in painting some whiskers on your face and wearing a slutty top and calling yourself a cat... I mean full on, weeks of planning, dressing up as the opposite sex, whatever it takes. For those who just walk through the door with a case of beer hoping to get in on the party... they really aren't even worth knowing, in my opinion. This weekend my best friends went all out, we defined how to party while dressed up. I went as Juno and let me tell you, I have never felt better about getting wasted as I did when I was projecting the image of a pregnant teenager. Other favorites included: Jen as Dog the Bounty Hunter, Mary as Steve Erkel, Ellie as Joel from Risky Business and Holly our Designated Driver as 'Crazy Brittany' sporting the infamous umbrella and short shorts. Nights like this one really make me love my friends even more then I ever thought possible. We conquer every time, no matter what.

MARY/ROB: HAVE A SWEET YEAR BEING 20! I LOVE YOU

HOLY FUCK PT 2

As you all know, this past Friday Holy Fuck killed it at the Starlite Room. I should've known I was in for a ridiculous night when a new friend of mine passed out and locked herself in my bathroom... before we even left for the show. Despite the minor set back, we made it downtown and proceeded to have our minds melted. The place was PACKED. Caught the last half of A Place to Bury Strangers, pleasantly surprised by them by the way. Then the feedback was unleashed, as Holy Fuck took the stage, the entire room was at their mercy. Mesmerized by the insane vibes Holy Fuck was sending out, a lot of the crowd tranced out and stood their fixated on the live performance. Ellie, Jen and I found some room, danced a bit, but then just stood back and appreciated the insanity. Overall, a really awesome night.

Dear Red Star;

Thanks so much for taking us in last night. I apologize for any debauchery that may have occurred. All around, wonderful Thursday night. Minus the lack of Pro Nails... but we really can't blame you for that.

Love always,
Michelle

holy fuck!

HOLY FUCK @ THE STARLITE ROOM
THIS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22
I saw them open up for GirlTalk last year and from what I can recall it was a wicked party.
Now they are touring all over with a new LP and fortunately for us,
they are stopping back in Edmonton.
Holy Fuck are the definition of filthy beats.
Don't miss out!

always dance, dance always

So apparently this guy has been putting out a dance video every day for about 9 months or so. Each day he goes to a new location, sets up the camera and rocks out to a new song. His youtube has tons of subscribers... tons of hits... tons of replies. I guess you would call him an 'internet phenomenon' Regardless, I give him props. Check out his videos, discovers some cool songs... make a better dance video, whatever. The point is there are over 300 videos, you're bound to dig one of them.

holy long weekend

Friday.... DIPLO... need I say more. Holy shit. The night started early and ended late. Between drinking, dancing and meeting a ton of great people, the night was just insane. So I may have stumbled once or twice, but it's all in the name of party. You can check out Taz's blog for a more detailed review of the sets as well as some dope mixes.

My poor friend Ellie missed her flight in from Ottawa on Friday so she had to miss Diplo, but there was still plenty of weekend to be had. Saturday we went to Latitude 53 for the 53 Ways To Leave Your Lover event. All I can say is Edmonton has some serious talent. There were tons of amazing pieces. Some of my favorites included a pair of 3D pieces, including the infamous glasses, as well a couple wood canvas works that were really stunning. Sipping on a glass of wine, Ellie and I enjoyed all that was the DJ. She relentlessly encouraged everyone to get on the dance floor and jam to the new wave beats. Unfortunately we couldn't stick around for the fashion show, but I'm sure it was stunning. I actually had the chance to participate in it last year which was a blast.

Family Day Monday, Ellie, Mary and I headed downtown for some Zuppa. In the back of my mind I was hoping it would be open, unfortunately due to the holiday, it was closed. We ended up walking all over downtown just searching for somewhere to have lunch. We covered about 10 blocks and found ourselves at the all Canadian Soup/Sandwich place in City Center. For what it cost it was actually pretty good. While we were walking downtown we saw that the Art Gallery of Alberta was having a free family day. We stopped in and spent a couple hours looking around. I saw one particular piece that looked really familiar. Then I realized it was actually by a friend of a friend, Jaime Calayo. His work featured lyrics from Daft Punk. Automatic win in my books. So if you get a chance you should head down to the AGA, check out the features by the UofA students in particular. Really creative, exciting and colorful. There's something for everyone.

Happy Valentine's Day

A lot of people have mixed feelings towards Valentines Day. For those in a relationship, it can be used as an opportunity to share your feelings, maybe a gift, whatever, it's all good. Mind you, for the singles of the world, Valentines Day is kind of like a big slap in the face. NOW I personally love Valentines Day, single or attached. That's probably because no matter what my Mom will get me some chocolate. But that's beside the point. I figure we can all use this day not to feel sorry that you're single, or judge your boyfriend or girlfriend by what they got you, or didn't get you. We can use it to appreciate our friends, family and loved ones. Giving a friend a Valentine is a nice way to say I care. So no matter how you spend your day... know that I, Michelle, want you to be my Valentine! Love all around.

Clark and Michael

Now it's no secret that I'm in love with Arrested Development. So last year I was so stoked when I heard about an Internet TV show that Michael Cera (aka George Bluthe) would be co-creating... but for some reason I never followed up on it. Today I discovered the joy that is : Clark and Michael. This hilarious mini-series features Michael Cera and his real life best friend Clark Duke. Over the past year, the two have been working together to produce the internet TV show for their website www.clarkandmichael.com
Clark Duke oozes with wit and sarcasm while Cera shines as his usual awkward self. I've only seen the first couple episodes and I'm in love already. Here's a series promo for Clark and Michael:

Kanye: Live at the Grammy's

Kanye can do no wrong. Last night at the Grammy's his performance with Daft was insane... then he broke out a song dedicated to his mother who recently passed away. I don't think I've ever texted people telling them to turn on their tv's... but last night I did. Here's the performance in case you missed it. Can't wait for his stop in Edmonton, tickets go on sale this week!

Play Safe

This weekend was the definition of a beautiful disaster. If the pictures don't speak for themselves, there's little else I can say. Saturday night Mary and I found ourselves at the downtown at The Artery. Needless to say, things got excessive, high waisted pants were worn... from what I can recall I'm sure we busted some sick moves on the dance floor.

They come from the land down under...

This morning I found myself listening to some pretty cool stuff from 'the land down under'. A friend of mine is actually taking off to the New Zealand, even though she'll be back packing, I figured there must be some bands worth keeping an eye out for. So I sat around on myspace and I actually ended up stumbling across a band called Theatre Of Disco. These Aussies have been described as "the perfect blend of indie rock, electro, funk, and art punk."
With major emphasis on their stage show, complete with costumes and make up, Theatre Of Disco knows how to start a party. Opening up for well known duo: Uffie and Feadz, it's just a matter of time before Theatre Of Disco really blows up. I'd almost say they remind me of Hot Chip in that they have that melodic yet upbeat/danceable sound to them. You can check out their debut EP on myspace or download it on itunes, either way make sure you check em out.

Strike!

Bowling and Beer... I cant think of a more perfect combination. This past Friday I found myself at the local bowling alley and had such a good time. Even better...the fact that it was NEON bowling.. and I had the freshest shoes you've ever seen. It was so much fun. But really what 'sport' isn't fun when beer is involved. My game started out a little shaky, however it started picking up around my 4th drink. The point is I saw two bowling balls get dropped on the lane.. and we basically got kicked out at 1am haha. So I suggest one of these days you get out to the lanes.. trust me it will be hilarious.
