LITTLE BOOTS - AUTOMATIC LOVERS MIX

Little Boots just recently got off her Automatic Lover's Tour with Heartbreak. She stopped by Annie Mac's radio1 show and did a mini mix which was inspired by the tour...go figure. Very new wave, very uptempo, very necessary. To stay informed on all things Boots subscribe to her website and a free track will sweeten the deal.

BOXING DAY SOUNDCLASH

When I read Thunderheist was playing in Edmonton I could barely believe my eyes. Actually I couldn't so I wrote them an email just to make sure it wasn't a mistake. This is going to be one of the sickest parties the holiday break will see. They just ripped up the West Coast and headed off to Europe but Edmonton is lucky enough to host the duo known as Thunderheist live at the Starlite Room on Boxing Day.

FORGET IT - TRASH YOURSELF

John Burke and Heidi Cannon make up the electro/trash/glam duo known as Trash Yourself. Together they have been pumping out infectious tracks and working with the likes of The Toxic Avenger. Over the summer their NWA cover "Fuck the Police" was featured as part of the Buffet Libre DJ's cover project. Needless to say you can expect big things from Trash Yourself in the near future. The single "Forget Yourself" is undeniably catchy and still manages to capture the rawness that Trash Yourself are known for.

SHELLS - MIA

In a relationship, typically if one person announces they want to go on a break... everyone knows that it almost always ends in a breakup. Thankfully in the case of M.I.A. and her fans, the break did its job. After the major radio success of Paper Planes it's nice to see M.I.A.'s latest release didn't veer to far from her previous work. You can grab the How Many Votes Fix EP from iTunes (not available in Canada). The EP features a Jay-Z remix of Boyz as well as a new track called Shells. A catchy, upbeat tune with a message, from M.I.A? Who would've thought?

ZOMBIES! - DESIGNER DRUGS

Halloween is quickly approaching and once again I still haven't decided on a costume. The only thing I know for certain about his Halloween is that DJs all over are going to be haunting crowds with Designer Drugs latest release - Zombies! This track reminds me of one of those sound track tapes you buy to play outside your house on Halloween but obviously way dirtier and more danceable. This isn't just water dripping and a few werewolf cries... Filled with distorted vibrations and a killer beat this is the perfect track for an electro-zombie dance party.

CHAD VANGAALEN

Chad VanGaalen is the complete package. The same can be said for his his latest release Soft Airplane. This singer/song writer/artist/illustrator, spends the majority of his time in his basement in Calgary. Creating is what Chad does. Recently, his collection of words, sounds, drum machine's, lo-fi recordings ect, have come together under the album Soft Airplane. Stories of life, death and the beautiful things in between make up his 3rd album released through SubPop Records (INTL) and Flemish Eye Records (CAN). Rarely does it happen that such a young artist can put together such a cohesive album that truly does capture your attention and heart from start to finish. With his distinct sound VanGaalen has solidified himself in the Canadian music scene and now finds himself on tour once again. You can check out Chad VanGaalen this October as he passes through Edmonton on the 17th.

AMERICAN TEEN

This week I went and checked out the documentary American Teen. The film focuses on the mess that is being a high school student in small town Warsaw, Indiana. Hannah Bailey, Megan Krizmanich, Jake Tusing, Colin Clemens, and Mitch Reinholt really have nothing in common but the dream to make something of themselves after high school...or not. The driving force of the story line is Hannah Bailey, a quirky, heartbroken teen, who wishes for nothing but a one way ticket to California. She is the quintessential odd ball who manages to catch the eye of the high school "hottie" Mitch Reinholt. Needless to say, high school relationships come with their fair share of drama. American Teen is true to its title. A story that any teen, or former teen for that matter, can relate too. Whether you were the jock, geek, princess, reject or whatever, you'll find yourself engaged by the stories of these young adults. Not to mention the film is grounded by a fresh soundtrack packed with the likes of The Ting Tings, MGMT, The Black Kids, ect. Don't miss this!

GREETINGS FROM SWITZERLAND PT.2

This morning I woke up to a crack of thunder and an email from Stephan in Switzerland. Nice way to start the day if you ask me. First got introduced to Divison Kent a little while back and I can't get enough. With French lyrics, Andrea's airy voice, a hint of mystery and Shook's rework, Divison Kent have proved themselves again. Enjoy!

HEY OCEAN!

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the summer months slip by. Already, back to school commercials are plaguing the air waves, students are slowly migrating back to the city and the sunset creeps up earlier each night. Having not yet made it out to the west coast this year... I've been searching for that little piece of beachy summer nostalgia to keep the dream alive, that yes I may get a vacation before the daily grind of scheduled life starts back up again in September.

Hey Ocean! were exactly what I was looking for. Late one night, my brother threw on a CD and all his friends instantly tuned in and started raving about how amazing the band's live performance was at the Virgin Festival. We had to listen to the CD twice just so I could actually hear it over all the reminiscing.

Hailing from Vancouver, this eclectic group is lead by vocalist Ashleigh Ball who's soulful voice commands the attention of the entire room. Her partner in crime David Beckingham - Vocals/Guitar, is also a major influence in the writing and sound of the band. The vocal duo are accompanied by worldly inspired Dave Vertesi - Bass and Dan Klenner - Percussion.

With an arsenal of feel good singles and an ever growing fan base, this young band from the West Coast will spend the rest of their summer touring B.C and reminding me why I need to go spend some time at the ocean before it's too late.

IF LOOKS COULD KILL

Do any of you know someone who is constantly dressed up? Has sworn against sweatpants, jeans or never to return to the fateful pajama bottom...even in the privacy of their own home? I have a friend who's resolves are similar. Always rocking an outfit that is usually considered overdressed, my friend Jyll has her priorities straight. Never looking plain, dull or not herself. That being said, I've seen some of the most amazing dresses on this girl, and guess where they're from.

MEESE: a local boutique situated in downtown St.Albert. I had the pleasure of shooting a story inside last year and interviewed the owners Tressa and Evan. Only in it's second year, this store is packed with the latest Canadian designers. As well as boasting an in house label, "Sessa", Meese proudly displays current fashions for men and women alike.

GREETINGS FROM SWITZERLAND

Found out about Division Kent last week from a promoter over in Switzerland. This duo (Andrea B. & Sky Antinori) have a dreamy, underground quality about them; wrapped in a very danceable package. They kind of reminded me of a darker version of Little Boots, which isn't a bad thing at all. I think by now everyone knows I'm a sucker for female vox and this track 'No Kryptonite' reminded me why. It's an easy listen and flows really nicely. Well done Switzerland, well done.

STEVE AOKI @ THE BANK

If you didn't check out Steve Aoki last Friday, you missed out on one of the summer's hottest parties. There was so much going on that night it's to hard to go into detail. However, some of my personal highlights included; bumping into tons of familiar faces, dancing in the tent, watching Steve Aoki jump into the crowd, meeting Mark Hunter and watching him convince the ignorant bouncers who he was, skipping the line, how wasted "Becky" the bartender was, going to the Leg grounds and standing in the fountain, walking back to the south end and wondering how the night could have been more surreal.

THUNDERHEIST VIDEO CONTEST WINNER

A few months ago Thunderheist issued this challenge to their fans; who could created the best video for their single Jerk It. They received plenty of submissions and narrowed it down to the top 3. Fans voted for their favorite video and the winner was announced yesterday! The top 3 cuts were all really diverse and had completely different concepts. This isn't the video I voted for, but technically speaking the quality of the actual video is incredibly professional.

KID COLOR - CARDED & DISCARDED MIX

I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this mix waiting for me in my inbox. I hadn't heard of Kid Color, so here's the low down: Kyle Woods is a DJ & producer from southern California, currently living in Chicago who spins electro, electronica, house, indie and hip hop. He's a resident DJ at the Deboniar Social Club in Chicago and started the "Blow the Speakers" event with the Dark Wave Disco DJ's.

This mix is full of some of my favorite singles, anyone who loves to mix Daft, Spank Rock and Kid Sis gets an A in my books. Basically every hit from the last little while is in this mix, conveniently packaged for your listening pleasure. This is a people pleaser for sure. Enjoy!

M.I.A VS EDMONTON PICS

M.I.A ... I have no words. She's the best. I lost my voice that night. During 10$ girls got up on stage and got to jam right along side the one and only M.I.A. The fellas were let up for none other than Boyz, surprise! I guess she's retiring and this is her last tour? Props for going out while you're still on top. OH YA. M.I.A announced her engagement to Benjamin Brewer on Tuesday. All the best!

EVERYBODY NOSE (FEAT CRS & PUSHA T) - N.E.R.D

Kanye killed it. He captivated an arena full of people without any back up. Just Kanye and his hits. My personal favs of the night... Rhianna covering M.I.As Paper Planes! Even though half the place had no idea what was going on, the ones who did were in for a real treat. Also, N.E.R.D were completely insane, really entertaining. Anyway, I know this tune has been out for a while but in light of the recent Edmonton stop off, here it is:

HIGH WIRE FILMS- LOSING WILL

If you missed the December premier of Losing Will like I did, you'll be happy to know you can now view this full length film online. Losing Will has been accepted into the online portion of the Tribeca Film Festival and if it receives enough online votes it will be screened as part of the independent feature section of Tribeca Film Festival in NYC. Created by local improve troupe Young Guns, along with Mike Robertson, these Edmonton boys really proved what hard work can do. With most of the film shot using improvised lines, the characters develop in such a raw way that you can't help but become attached. Produced by High Wire Films, the cinematography is beautiful and flows perfectly with the musical score, also provided by many talented Edmontonians. I definitely recommend checking this film out and if you like it, VOTE!
"Losing Will is a funny and heartfelt story about friendship.
A young man is forced to confront what really matters in life after
having the use of his body taken from him in an accident."
